Successful trial of new directional casing drilling concept
Huisman Well Technology’s (HWT) development team successfully developed and tested the Enhanced Casing Installation (ECI) casing drill system with Akiets High Strength Composite Tubular (HSCT) as a unique component of the shoe track to enable directional casing drilling in a 264m deep test well.
Last weeks HWT successfully executed and finalized the evaluation of the next phase for its beta version of the ECI version of a Rotary Steerable System: a fully-mechanical and continuously rotating directional casing while drilling system.
The next phase was to evaluate the directional performance to quantitative measure the overall DLS-variance and to test closed loop directional drilling. The goal was to drill vertically to a designated depth, the kick-off point (KOP), at 100m and deflect the well path by increasing well inclination towards Magnetic North. From the KOP in soft clays, the well was drilled with a build-up rate (BUR) upto 5.6°/30m (5.6°/100ft). The test proofed the steering concept and showed the capability of the system to produce a consistently high buildrate independent of formation and drilling parameters. Furthermore and despite the high speed rotations of the system over a longer period no wear was experienced including the composite window which was used to orient.
